Uma Thurman’s Action Comeback, Plays the Villain in The Old Guard 2

Hollywood icon Uma Thurman has returned with great impact in the action style with an upcoming Netflix movie The Old Guard 2 in which she stars with Charlize Theron. Acting as the long-anticipated comeback of Thurman in the action film world, this film is set to be released on June 2, 2025, almost 20 years since the iconic actress starred in Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2.

In one of her recent interviews with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Thurman revealed the factors that made her avoid action films for so long and wanted to take part in The Old guard 2 as her farewell to the genre.

I Never Wanted to Get in B Grade Action Films-Uma Thurman

Her performance as The Bride in Kill Bill won her global accolades, but Thurman not only chose not to follow up with more action scenes, but she also permanently left the genre.

Talking to Fallon, she said, as soon as you have done Kill Bill, you cannot get rid of it. I did not want to get into a series of B action movies. I needed to be very watchful on how to proceed.”

The basis behind her choice was to maintain the legacy and quality of what she did in Kill Bill instead of selling it out with lesser roles.

Why She Chose The Old Guard 2

The sequel to Netflix’s 2020 hit The Old Guard was the first action script in years that caught Thurman’s attention. Charlize Theron’s performance as Andy, the immortal warrior, impressed her deeply.

“Charlize was just so epic in [the first Old Guard],” Thurman said. “I thought, ‘I could go do this for her support her, fight her, battle her out.’”

Thurman enjoyed the text behind the script and distinctiveness of the story. She added that the film was well characterized and emotionally rich that it is not an ordinary action film.

Playing the Villain: A Fun Twist

In The Old Guard 2, Uma Thurman appears as the lead antagonist and she claimed that it was enjoyable and refreshing mostly due to the fact that the bad guy had a bit of humor.

When it comes to the really funny bad guys, I said, it is fun.

Fans are excited to see Thurman in this darker, yet entertaining, role after her fierce hero persona in Kill Bill.

No Training? No Problem

Interestingly, Thurman revealed she didn’t get much time to train for the film due to her late entry into the project.

“I came on at the end. I had no training,” she laughed. “I was like, ‘Oh yeah, a sword… I think I hold it like this.’”

Despite the lack of formal prep, her years of experience in physical roles clearly helped her pull it off convincingly.

The Most Challenging Scene? Eating on Camera

Surprisingly, the hardest part of her role wasn’t the action sequences it was eating while acting.

“You don’t pick what’s on the menu. You have to speak and swallow at the same time,” she said. “You start to worry about choking.”

She jokingly added, “A good eating scene should be on my bucket list.”

Will There Be The Old Guard 3?

When Fallon asked about the possibility of a third film in the franchise, Thurman responded with a tease:

“There’s whispers… I think we’ll leave it to the fans.”

While nothing is officially confirmed, Thurman hinted that the door is open for more, depending on audience demand.

What About Kill Bill Vol. 3?

Unfortunately for fans hoping for a continuation of Kill Bill, Thurman said that although the idea was discussed years ago, there are no active plans.

“There was real thought about it happening, but very long ago,” she said in a 2022 interview. “I don’t see it immediately on the horizon.”

Concluding the Obsessions: Uma Thurman in her Comeback is a Must See

The fact that Uma Thurman comes back to action is more than a comeback, it is a statement. In The Old Guard 2, she takes back her role in the action genre, but this time, she is a daring and an intricate villain. The interaction between her and Charlize Theron, the high level of production, and the sensitive nature of the plot have seen to it that an action film is as clever as it will be exciting.
