Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and His Brother Die in Car Accident in Spain

Such is very sad news to the world history of football followers. A renowned Liverpool and Portuguese player Diogo Jota was killed in a road accident in Spain. And his younger brother Andre Silva also succumbed in the same accident. The car ran off the road and caught fire as both of the brothers were in the car.

The plane crashed in an area close to Zamora in Spain early in the morning on Thursday. The police claimed that the car was very fast. It went out of control, left the road, and then caught fire. Firefighters tried to put out the fire, but both Diogo and André died at the scene of the accident. Police believe that a tire on the car burst, which made the car crash. No other car was involved.

Diogo Jota was only 28 years old. He married his long-time partner Rute Cardoso just a few weeks ago. They had three small children together. His last year was the birth time of his youngest child. This has caused a lot of sadness and shock upon many people.

Football World Is Heartbroken

Liverpool Football Club shared a message saying:

“The Liverpool football club is so saddened due to the loss of Diogo Jota. We extend our warmest wishes to those of his family, friends and teammates. We seek to give them privacy during this hard time and request everyone to give them their privacy.”

Even the city of Liverpool did express their respect. At Liverpool Town Hall their flag was hauled down to half-mast. Online the council wrote:

“All at Liverpool FC, send their thoughts to Diogo Jota and his family and friends.”

Players and Clubs Share Their Grief

Cristiano Ronaldo, who played many games with Jota for Portugal, was also very sad. He wrote online:

“This does not make sense. We were just together with the national team, and you had just gotten married. I send my prayers and strength to your family, your wife, and your children. Rest in peace, Diogo and André.”

Previous Liverpool manager Jogi Klopp mentioned he was wrecked:

“I cannot believe this happened. Diogo was not just a great player, but also a kind man and a loving father. My heart goes out to his wife, his kids, and all who loved him.”

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher wrote:

“This is terrible news. I am thinking about Diogo’s wife and three young children. My heart goes out to them.”

Other clubs, like Manchester United, also shared their condolences. Manchester United wrote:

“Our deepest condolences go to the family of Diogo Jota and his brother André. We stand with Liverpool FC at this very sad time.”

Diogo’s old club Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he played before Liverpool, said:

“We are heartbroken by this news. Diogo was loved by our fans, his teammates, and everyone at the club.”

A Successful Football Career

Diogo Jota started playing in Liverpool after moving to the team in 2020. He emerged as a very essential character in the team. His total number of goals in Liverpool was 50 in 182 games played. He has contributed to Liverpool a large number of trophies and in May 2025, Liverpool won the premier league, the FA Cup, and the carabao cup.

Prior to Liverpool, Diogo featured in Wolverhampton Wanderers which adored him because of his pace and goal scoring potential. Atlantic Madrid and FC Porto are some other teams where he used to play before. Diogo entered the world of professional football in Portugal when he joined a team known as Paoxos de Ferreira.

Diogo Jota played 49 matches for the national team of Portugal. He achieved 14 goals in his nation. He has led Portugal to victory in UEFA Nations League in 2019 and only a month ago. He was a man who gave a hundred percent in everything and was an energy giver in every game.

He also had a 25-year old brother named Andre Silva, also a player in football. He has been with the lower divisions club Penafiel.

The World Pays Tribute

UEFA said they will hold a minute of silence before the Women’s Euro 2025 matches on Thursday and Friday to honor Diogo and André. Many football clubs around Europe and the world shared their sadness online. Fans everywhere are sharing memories of Diogo’s goals, celebrations, and kind personality.

Famous sports stars from outside football also paid tribute. Tennis star Rafael Nadal wrote online that he was very sad to hear this news. NBA star LeBron James, who is part-owner of Liverpool through Fenway Sports Group, posted:

“My prayers go out to Diogo’s family and everyone who loved him. Rest in peace, Diogo. You will never walk alone.”

Remembering Diogo and André

Diogo Jota was known to be very fast, energetic and a goal scorer. On the field, he always had a smile on his face and everybody would love him including his teammates and fans. Off the field, he was a nice person, a good husband, and a father to his kids. His family adored him as well as his brother Andre, who too was fond of football.

The loss of Diogo Jota and Andre’ Silva is very big to their family, their friends, their clubs, and to millions of fans globally. They cannot be forgotten due to what they have given in this field of football and to the people in terms of joy.
